I work at a group home, and I had to work on Easter. I am NOT a religious person, but it was my first holiday not spent with my family — and I have a big family, and lots of traditions — so I was kind of bummed. Three out of the four girls at my house were going to be there for Easter too, and I felt bad that they weren’t going to be with their families either. So for my own benefit, and for theirs, I brought Peeps and Tootsie Pops to hide, for them to find that morning.
Well, one of the girls is Orthodox Jewish, but I mean, the candy and Easter bunny crap is all the secular part of Easter, and I was not trying to bring a religious element into it at all. If anything, I guess I was trying to share a fun (non-religious) tradition of mine, and what’s wrong with that? Another staff member is with a guy from Africa, and she makes African dishes for the girls all the time, to share part of her life/traditions. I know it’s not religious, but it’s somewhat similar…
But anyway, she told her mom that she got an Easter gift, and now I guess her whole family is freaking out. My manager called to see if it was me, and I don’t think I’ll get in big trouble, but it’s not fun knowing you did a “no-no.”
But if I do get in trouble, or it gets brought up, all I will say is that I know another staff member burned Christmas songs onto a CD for this Jewish girl, as well as put up a Christmas tree at the house, which the girl helped decorate, though she said, “I can’t ‘cause it’s against my religion,” and she got a Christmas present from that staff member, and that staff member didn’t get “reprimanded” for any of it…
And ALSO, this girl went to her own sister’s house, that had “SECULAR” Christmas decorations outside of it (snowmen, Christmas trees, etc.), and she made Christmas cookies there, so what’s up with that??
Besides the fact that it’s “against her religion,” she “probably shouldn’t have candy.” Wtf-ever. It was four Peeps, which have no fat, and she didn’t even eat them all at once.
I’m all for respecting other peoples’ religions, even if I’m not religious myself. I would never push any religion on anyone else. In fact, I don’t think we should have religions at all. But this is all just crazy to me. Get over it. Holidays, in my opinion, are a time to spend with family, and be good towards each other. The decorations and secular aspects are just for fun. Get over it.
